Madison and Maddy are more than just a team—they’re best friends. Since Maddy started working with Madison as her Direct Support Professional (DSP) last January, the two have discovered they have so much in common, from their love of cooking to their shared taste in music and movies.
In fact, their bond is so deep that it’s become a cornerstone of Madison’s journey towards achieving her dreams.
Madison, who has intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), is 17 and preparing for her senior year of high school. She’s set her sights on going to college in Arizona, where she hopes to continue her education and build her independence. With Maddy’s support, Madison has already taken significant steps in that direction. Recently, she earned her driver’s license and became more comfortable going out and meeting her needs on her own.
Self-direction has been key to Madison’s growth. CFS’ Self-Direction Services (SDS) has helped Madison define a plan to achieve her goals and to focus on the skills she wants to develop. She has started cooking, cleaning, and taking care of her home independently. Maddy has been instrumental in this process, gradually giving Madison space to take on more responsibilities while supporting her as she learns to manage them independently.
Madison prefers quieter, solitary activities, like yoga, swimming, and walking in the woods. She finds joy in discovering new recipes and cooking while listening to music. Maddy has the same love of cooking, which has brought Madison and Maddy even closer, as they experiment with creating new meals together.
For Maddy, who is also studying to become a school counselor, working with Madison has been a growing and incredibly rewarding experience.
“She’s by far my favorite person who I’ve worked with,” Maddy says. “We’re like best friends. It’s just so easy with her because we get along so well.”
Madison and Maddy’s journey together is a testament to the power of friendship, learning, connection, understanding, and mutual respect. And, as Madison continues to grow, Maddy continues to learn. For both friends, it is a priceless bond that has brought the support and encouragement Madison needs to achieve the independence she’s striving so hard for—on her own terms.
