CEO Message
Dear CFS Community,
I’m honored to share the 2023 Center for Family Support Annual Report, Celebrating Personal Journeys. Thank you to the staff, participants, families, donors, partners, Board Members, and the rest of the CFS family who make our work so fulfilling and meaningful. As I start my own journey as the CEO of CFS this year, I look forward to meeting you all and collaborating on new initiatives.
One of the things I love most about CFS is that we believe everyone’s life-path is different, and each person’s goals will bring them to a unique destination. We also realize that the journey itself – full of community, relationships, and growth – is something worth celebrating. I’m sure you recognize that within your own life; I know I do in mine. For decades, we’ve been pioneers in ensuring that these fundamental truths about life are central to our approach in supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
I invite you to review this Report and do something we do every day – celebrate the personal journeys and unique lives of those we work with. Thank you again to our partners and donors for making possible all the special services and programs we offer to help those we support attain more independence and enjoy richer, fuller lives.
With gratitude,
Alicia McGrath
CFS CEO
CFS Stories
Hyman and Friends Make Magical Music
Hyman loves music – he’s well known at the karaoke clubs around his Lower East Side apartment. During COVID, he and a group of other CFS participants would get together on Zoom and share their favorite songs. Once they could get together safely, they worked with a song writer, and wrote, recorded, and made a video for CFS’ first ever theme song!
Swimming and Smiles with CFS Residents
Kristopher and Jack live together in one of our small homes in Staten Island, and they both love swimming. This summer, they competed at the JoAnn Young International Swim meet international swim meet where they both won medals! Their DSP, George, was with them every stroke of the way.
Meet Elisanta: CFS Advocate of the Year
Elisanta has achieved much in her life – she lives on her own, got her GED, takes care of her parakeets, and is a determined self-advocate. CFS recognized her efforts by bestowing her the CFS Advocate of the Year Award. “I was so grateful and excited when I received the award, it actually brought me to tears,” recalls Elisanta.
Oscar Leads the Charge for Supported Decision Making
Oscar has spent years spreading awareness about Supported Decision Making (SDM), a tool that enables individuals with disabilities to make choices about their own lives and who supports them. His vital advocacy helped the bill become law in New York, and now he has his sights set on other states and even other countries.
Impact Stats
Fiscal Year 2023 (7/1/2022-6/30/2023)
1,403 Direct Support Professionals provide a skilled, reliable, and caring support system for those we work with to enable them to reach their full potential. Our DSPs share life experiences with those we support and provide coaching to learn life skills, gain new experiences and advocate for themselves.
299 individuals participated in Community Programs in New York where we personalize our variety of in-home and community-based services to suit individual needs, preferences, and objectives. In addition to habilitation in the home and in the community, we also provide supported employment and respite services for primary caregivers.
479 individuals are enrolled in CFS self-directed services, where individuals and their families create their own budgets to support their life goals and even hire their own staff. We provide unparalleled support to families so they can focus on creating the best possible environment for their loved ones.
262 individuals live in CFS residences in New York and New Jersey. Our community residences provide a home environment where depending on wants and needs, individuals might live on their own with staff coming in a few hours a day; others live independently with assistance managing their household. Where individuals need more support we provide 24 hour staffing. Based on their needs and preferences, individuals may live in small homes with others or in their own apartment.
122 people attended one of our NJ Day Programs, where we help individuals build friendships, learn new skills, and connect with their community to live a more fulfilling life. Participants are offered courses that enhance education and wellbeing, including supported employment opportunities.
201 advocacy and skill-building workshops were held. Individuals from all our programs and in both states attended in-person and virtual programs. These workshops – often hosted by community partners – helped participants improve their self-advocacy skills, engage in wellness activities, and explore their creativity.
Thank you to our community partners!
In addition to providing education and fostering independence, these organizations also promoted community integration which helps reduce the social isolation often faced by those with disabilities.
